Your Why

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing” - Walt Disney

Today we are going to discuss Your ‘Why’ on starting a Business.

Everyone starts a business for their own personal reason and there are many reasons why people have started a business.

Why did you start your business?

It’s the first question I always ask anyone at one of my Strategy Days or 1:1 sessions. Some business owners give a vague answer and others struggle to remember why. What was once the main reason for starting their business has often been lost, forgotten and got swallowed up by work, stress and a sense that they are no longer in control of their business.

The reason why they started, which for most was a sense of freedom, work life balance, and flexibility to be their own boss, has been replaced by lots of work, deadlines, long hours and often burnout. If this feels like you then STOP. Take a break from the hectic day to day running of your business and start to think about what you really want from being in business. Don’t let that business run you, but get back the essence of your ‘WHY’ and start to control your business.

One of the great ways to do this is to take a day out of the office to work on a plan or vision for where you want you and your business to be in the future. Look back at WHY you started your business and try to get the reasons for this back. They might have changed as things have developed but imagine if you could run your business to give you back your WHY. Nothing is impossible once you have a plan, and if you combine it with the tools to make this a reality, you can gain back control of your business and your life.

Here is a list of why people start businesses. I’m sure some of these resonate with you:

1. Independence and Control: Being your own boss allows you to set your own schedule, make decisions, and steer your business in the direction you envision.

2. Financial Potential: You have the opportunity to build wealth and achieve financial success based on the success of your business.

3. Passion and Purpose: If you’re passionate about a product, service, or idea, starting a business can give you the chance to turn that passion into something tangible and meaningful.

4. Flexibility: Owning your business can provide more freedom in terms of work-life balance, particularly if you can set your own hours or work remotely.

5. Creative Freedom: You have the liberty to innovate, test new ideas, and experiment without the constraints typically found in a corporate environment.

6. Personal Growth: Running a business challenges you to develop new skills, solve problems, and improve your leadership abilities.

7. Legacy and Impact: You can build something that outlasts you, creating jobs, serving your community, or having a lasting impact in your industry.

8. Job Security: By owning your business, you control your own fate instead of relying on an employer for your livelihood, reducing the risk of layoffs or downsizing.

9. Networking and Relationships: Owning a business helps you build valuable connections with other entrepreneurs, clients, and stakeholders in your industry.

10. Opportunity to Scale: You can grow your business as much as you desire, adding products, services, or locations over time if you’re successful.
